PE
Intent
At our school, we believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, healthy competition and active lifestyles.
We aim to provide a broad, balanced and inclusive PE curriculum that enables every child to develop physical competence, confidence and resilience. Through high-quality teaching and varied sporting opportunities, pupils build fundamental movement skills, teamwork, leadership, respect and sportsmanship.
Our PE curriculum is designed to:
- Develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
- Build confidence, resilience and perseverance.
- Promote positive attitudes towards health, fitness and wellbeing.
- Encourage teamwork, communication and leadership skills.
- Ensure all children experience success and enjoyment in physical activity.
- Foster an understanding of fair play, respect and inclusion.
- Inspire pupils to continue participating in sport and physical activity beyond school.
We strive to ensure that every pupil, regardless of ability or background, can access and enjoy PE and school sport.
Implementation
PE is taught through a progressive, skills-based curriculum that builds knowledge, physical competency and understanding over time. The school uses the Beyond The Physical scheme of work to help embed this throughout school. Across the school, children experience a wide variety of activities, which include:
- Fundamental movement skills in the early years and Key Stage 1.
- Games, invasion sports and team activities.
- Gymnastics and dance.
- Athletics and outdoor adventurous activities.
- Swimming (Year 4).
- Opportunities for competitive sport and personal challenge.
To enrich the curriculum, pupils also have access to:
- Extra-curricular clubs and sporting activities.
- Intra-school (House Cup) and inter-school competitions.
- Leadership opportunities and sports leaders.
- Active playtimes (OPAL) and wellbeing initiatives.
- Links with local sports providers and community clubs such as Leeds United, Hunslet Club and Jason Robinson Foundation.
Impact
Our PE curriculum enables pupils to leave our school as physically literate, confident and motivated individuals who understand the importance of leading healthy, active lives.
Children demonstrate:
- Improved physical skills, coordination and fitness.
- Confidence in participating in a range of physical activities.
- Positive attitudes towards teamwork, challenge and resilience.
- Respect, fairness and good sportsmanship.
- Increased knowledge of health, fitness and wellbeing.
- Enthusiasm for sport and active lifestyles beyond the classroom.
- Competence and confidence in swimming, with pupils developing essential water safety knowledge and the ability to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, using a range of strokes.
