Intent
- Ensure children become fluent in the fundamentals of Maths, developing their conceptual understanding and ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Develop children’s ability to solve problems, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately in a range of contexts.
- Ensure that children are equipped with the mathematical vocabulary needed to develop an argument, justify and prove their ideas.
- Develop reasoning skills so that children can identify patterns and relationships.
- Present Maths as a challenging, exciting and relevant subject and in doing so, ensure children become confident, resilient and creative mathematicians.
Implementation
- White Rose Maths Schemes of Learning are followed so that there is clear progression across each year group and learning is built upon, year by year.
- Fluency and Problem Solving or Reasoning takes place in every lesson.
- Lessons are differentiated to ensure the needs of SEND and more able children are met.
- Maths working walls display key vocabulary and is referred to throughout lessons.
- Daily 10 sessions develop children’s fluency skills, revisiting previously learned knowledge, concepts and procedures, ensuing mathematical knowledge is embedded.
- TT Rockstars is used to develop children’s fluency in times tables and related facts.
- Practical maths equipment is available in all classrooms to support children in exploring concrete, pictorial and abstract ways of working. Equipment displayed in classrooms so that children can self-select and become more self-sufficient.
- Maths events and workshops inside and outside school allow the subject leader to share best practice on how to challenge more able children.
Impact
- All children leave Beeston Primary School with the necessary skills to take them on to further education.
- Children enjoy their Maths lessons and talk positively about what they are learning.
- Children talk confidently about Maths using appropriate mathematical vocabulary, justifying and explaining their reasoning.
- Children are able to demonstrate their understanding of a range of mathematical concepts in a variety of ways, using concrete apparatus, diagrams and visual representations and also by using more abstract methods.
- Children of all abilities have a growth mindset towards Maths, evidenced by observations and pupil voice.
- Children make excellent progress from their often low starting points despite the many barriers they face.
- Children demonstrate their resilience in problem solving and reasoning and are able to work independently and collaboratively to reach a solution.
- Engagement with TT Rockstars increases so that a larger percentage of children are active players, leading to children being more fluent in recall of their times tables and related facts.
- Children working at greater depth are appropriately challenged and continue to make good progress.
Further Information
Mathematics at Beeston Primary School
At Beeston Primary School, we deliver our mathematics curriculum through the White Rose Maths scheme of learning. This provides a carefully planned, sequential curriculum that follows the principles of Teaching for Mastery, enabling children to build knowledge and skills progressively throughout their time at school, securing foundational knowledge to enable success. Every child experiences this ambitious curriculum, with appropriate adaptations and support to ensure all learners can access and succeed in mathematics in education and later life. Lessons are designed to develop fluency alongside reasoning and problem-solving, with these elements forming an integral part of every lesson. We aim for all pupils to leave Beeston Primary School as confident, articulate mathematicians who can explain their thinking, apply their knowledge in a range of contexts and use mathematics effectively in everyday life.
Retrieval Practice
Retrieval practice is an embedded feature of our mathematics lessons and plays a key role in helping children retain and build upon previous learning. Regular opportunities to revisit key concepts strengthen long-term memory and improve confidence when tackling new mathematical ideas. In Key Stage 1, children develop secure arithmetic foundations through daily practice using approaches such as Flashback Four, Big Maths and maths meetings. In Key Stage 2, children complete a Daily Five or Daily Ten of core skills alongside regular opportunity to tackle reasoning and problem-solving questions. These short, focused activities provide regular opportunities to rehearse core number facts and calculation skills, ensuring fluency develops over time.
Oracy in Mathematics
Oracy is at the heart of mathematics teaching at Beeston Primary School. We provide frequent opportunities for pupils to discuss, explain and justify their mathematical thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary. Through partner talk, echoing, whole-class discussion and structured reasoning activities, children develop the confidence to communicate their ideas clearly, listen to others and build on ideas. These opportunities deepen understanding and strengthen reasoning skills, enabling pupils to become thoughtful and reflective mathematicians.
Times Tables Fluency
Developing rapid recall of multiplication and division facts is a key part of our mathematics curriculum. Pupils in Years 2–6 regularly use Times Tables Rock Stars to practise and secure their times tables knowledge in an engaging and motivating way. Frequent, short practice sessions help children build fluency, accuracy and confidence, enabling them to recall multiplication facts automatically and apply them effectively when solving more complex mathematical problems. This consistent approach supports pupils in preparing for the statutory Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, while also providing the strong foundations needed for success in later areas of mathematics, including fractions, long multiplication, division and algebra.

Supporting Learning at Home
We encourage families to play an active role in supporting mathematics learning beyond the classroom as well as regularly inviting families in for Stay and Play Sessions for first-hand experience of our maths curriculum. At home, children in Years 2 – 6 access to Times Tables Rock Stars to build rapid recall of multiplication and division facts. Further to this, we encourage families to access other high-quality resources, including White Rose Education's 1 Minute Maths app to develop fluency with essential number skills, MathsBot for practising key mathematical concepts and Oak Academy resources. These engaging resources help reinforce classroom learning and promote confidence and independence in mathematics.
